I live in a typical house here in Turlock CA. I do not have that many pest problems and I need pest control about once a year in spring as all the little insects start coming out. Unfortunately, all of the pest control services, whether it be BJ's Pest Control, or Orkin, or Clark, etc.... all try to get you to sign onto a yearly contract where they come to your house about 4 times per year. Who needs that in a ......... desert? One time a year will more than suffice for the vast majority of folks in Turlock. So, about three years back, I called BJs and they sent out one of their main guys, who is named Carlos. It turns out Carlos is a great guy. Friendly personality and easy to work with. I very much wish I could hire just Carlos and dump BJs. In fact, Carlos is the only reason I do business with BJ's. At any rate, I signed a contract to try BJ's for the next year with four service periods (so that they would be treating my home about every 3 months). Things went relatively well because it was always Carlos who came. The guy did a good job and I never saw any insects in my home. I did think their fee of about $385 for one year (which is about $96 per service) was absolutely ridiculous. One of my friends is a medical doctor with a M.D. degree and a Ph.D., and he does not usually make $96 per 30 min. Get f........ serious BJ's! It takes all of 30 minutes for any inspector to spray your house and walkways, and even accounting for the insecticide solution, truck, fuel, etc... it does not come anywhere close to $96 per 30 min. (Of course, none of this has anything to do with Carlos, who did a great job) After my contract ran out, about a year passed by, and spring once again returned and I called to see if I could get Carlos to do a one time service. The way the call center works at BJ's, you cannot speak to any particular inspector directly, so I ended up talking to a lady who said she was the bookkeeper and also answers phones. She said it would now cost me $120 to have my house serviced. I said it was ridiculous that I should be charged an extra $24 fee just because I only need pest control about once a year. She preceded to mount her high horse and explain that one time services are even more expensive and "risky". I have no idea WTF that means but I finally got in contact with Carlos by back channels and explained the situation. In the end, Carlos was able to work with the management to do a one time service but for $100. So, overall I would give BJ's the company about two stars and Carlos the individual five stars. I very much wish Carlos would start his own pest company. You will have to make your own decision about how much pest control you need, but if you live in Turlock, I believe 4 times a year will be overkill for almost everyone. If you decide to call them, ask for Carlos. Caveat Emptor
